Social Enterprise School Recommendation [#permalink] New post 23 Aug 2005, 17:40

I am looking at specializing in Social Enterprise/Finance. Can you please recommend schools? Here is the link to my profile:

My long term MBA goal is to find funding for and manage the construction of green power plants throughout the United States and Canada. During my career as a power plant engineer I have reasearched green energy possiblities and toured many green energy facilities. These facilities reduce the strain that power production puts on the environment as well as generating large sustainable profits. With the cost of oil increasing, the Kyoto agreement, and with the United States wanting to reduce its dependancy on crude oil it is an opportune time to begin building these energy sources. I would like to specialize in Social Enterprise and Finance, both of which are required to be sucessful in this venture.

Regarding the schools I would like to attend, my preference is: cooperative, case study teaching, located in a major city center. This is what drew me to Columbia, its social enterprise program would fit with my futur plans. In addition Columbia has a green energy club, and NY State has a few green energy facilities that would help in my research.

I can post more indepth information if it would help.

Also, how do you define a reach, a competitive, and a safe school? Is it the applicant would have a greater than 90% chance getting into their safe school, 50% chance of getting into their competitive school, and less than 10% chance of getting into their reach school?

You advise is greatly appreciated,

Yes, Columbia is a very good one for that. Also consider Yale. They are strong on the social responsibility side as well as the entrepreneurship side. Haas, UT Austin, HBS, and Kellogg are also pretty strong here. And all of those will give you a good grounding in Finance, too.

Of course, to do social entrepreneurship you don't necessarily need to major in it. If you plan on jumping into that type of thing right after school, then it makes more sense to find a school with such a program. But you could also just get the best education that you can now, work for a few more years in industry, and then pursue your longer-term goals. Either is a valid strategy.
