Therefore, any person who wants to be as happy as possible would do well to consider not having a pet. Which one of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the sociologist’s argument? (A) Some people who have pets are happier than most people who do not. (B) Most people who have no pets occasionally wish that they had pets. (C) Most people who have pets are reasonably happy. I thinks its D.
Conclusion: ANY person to feel as happy as possible - don't keep a pet ("as happy as possible" - seems to refer to their own potential to achieve max possible happiness and not happiness in a comparative framework judged against those who don't have pets)
D - most people with pets feel "happier" because they have pets. so without a pet they will never be able to be "as happy as possible", coz they could always be "happier" with pets. Thus, conclusion wrt ANY person is defeated.

i think D is right.
Conclusion is: to be happy do not consider to have pet.
What can weaken it..?
People who are happy find their happiness from pets.
Rest everything is equal it said therefore the only thing which defines happiness is presence of pets.

I marked A as correct. But I think I am wrong.
A does not negate the fact that w/o the Pet, those people w/ Pet, will NOT be as happy has possible (in other words, will be less happy).
D however destroys the conclusion. If this true, these people w/Pet will NOT be as happy as possible.

D - I feel its a causality question. The pets do not cause the people to be less happy, but they are already unhappy people, and the pets increase their happiness.

A is wrong because:
1. The stimulus uses strong words as 'most' whereas option A uses 'some' in one place
2. Option D establishes the reason of happiness to be 'pets' whereas, option A fails to do that.

Correct :
Most ppl who have pets < happy than most ppl who do not have pets. The conclusion is any person who wants to be as happy as possible (Happy max) consider not having a pet. But if some people who have pets are happy (Happy max) more than most people( < Happy max) who do not, then that undermines the conclusion.
(B) Most people who have no pets occasionally wish that they had pets. Irrelevant
(C) Most people who have pets are reasonably happy. Real world plausible
(D) Most people who have pets feel happier because they have pets. Is happier = Happy as much as possible ? Doesnt address the conclusion
(E) All people who have no pets admit to feeling unhappy sometimes. Irrelevant

Thabk, try negating this and you see why you are wrong: Most people would feel less happy without their pet... uups! --> Weakener to the conclusion to not have a pet = more happiness!

Between A and D what is your take? I think so: the argument clearly says that people are NOT happy with pets, and we must contraddict this point. So we can split between who HAVE pets and who HAVE NO pets, we interest who HAVE pets. from this B and E out. A make a comparison, again, but maybe happier, true , but we are not sure about this. C reasonably happy: again as A: maybe or not D Most people who have pets feel happier because they have pets.: for sure..........people do not care, they are happy and stop.
