The direction in which the Earth and other solid planets - Mercury, Venus and Mars - spins were determined from collisions with giant celestial bodies in the early history of the solar System.

A) spins were determined from
B) spins were determined because of
C) spins was determined through
D) spin was determined by
E) spin was determined as a result of

determined by ....corect idiom

'll pick D.
Singular subject needs singular verb(was) instead of plural verb were.
Determined by is correct idiom and makes better sense than other choices.

don't you guys think that the D means that the collisions were deliberate? I actually think it's E.

yeah, I saw that too, but I can't fathom it. I think "as a result of" conveys the correct meaning. Need some expert comments here.

goalsnr, could you please elaborate? As I said before, D tells us that the collisions were deliberate, whereas E says that the spin happenned because of the collision. so, I think E is the best answer.

i think "determined by" is the correct usage and not "determined as a result of"

so D should be the answer.
