(A) Some buildings that were destroyed and heavily damaged in the earthquake last year were
(B) Some buildings that were destroyed or heavily damaged in the earthquake last year had been
(C) Some buildings that the earthquake destroyed and heavily damaged last year have been
(D) Last year the earthquake destroyed or heavily damaged some buildings that have been
(E) Last year some of the buildings that were destroyed or heavily damaged in the earth quake had been

The answer is B, however it uses or instead of and, shouldn' that change the meaning of the original sentence. ??

the building is either destroyed or heavily damaged. building cannot be both.

if it is destroyed then it is obviously heavily damaged. therefore redundancy.

another key here is that we need to use past particple, to show that the buildings were built before the earth quake destroyed them, therefor we need to use "had been"..

Absolutely.... past participle must be used here.....
And yes we need to have "or" between damaged and destroyed...those which are destroyed cannot be badly damaged.....

B is clearer, the last year refers to the earthquake occuring last year

Plus if you read E, it feels like there should be a pause there

If it was Last year, some blah blah blah

Then it'd be OK but otherwise it sounds weird
