I think the simple past
beats the past perfect
in this case

I go for A.
Past tense is ok, I don't think past perfect is necessary in that case.

parallels, thus I'll eliminate D & E.

In B, had been isn't required.

In C as if during, sounds weird
Thus I'll pick A.
