E preventing its acoustic energy from dissipating by

- "prevented from" refers to "sound"..its the accoustic energy that is "prevented from" getting dissipated. Eliminate A&B.
- while the sound travels the acoustic energy is prevented - to show this simultaneous action we must use "preventing..from" instead of "prevented..from". Eliminate C & D. (Guys let me know if my reasoning is correct)
- IMO E is correct.

The first thing that is noticeable about the Q is the structure . Do we need a MODIFIER or a CLAUSE. We can have both. But if we have clause , then it should be a dependent clause NOT an independent clause.
C and D introduce a clause ( as with a subject - its ) but there is NO subordinator.( Becuase ,therefore etc.) So it is run on sentence IC,IC. Straight away eliminate C and D.
So its clear we need a modifier. But A and B begin the modifier with PREVENTED. Be careful that the modifier is to modify "distances" . So prevented changes the meaning that the DISTANCES are prevented .... which is not the intended meaning.
Option E corrects the errors.

Would chose E over C .

don't what i would have done if it appeaared in gmat...

what's the OA ?

Firstly : its creates a modifier issue :- (It refers to sound but modifies distances )
Hence C, D are out..

We are left with , A , B, E

Now in A, B, E.

In A, B there is a tense issue . E is the only one that uses preventing and maintains the tense.

Hence E is the correct answer

This question is from Official Verbal Review (2nd Edition)-SC Q108 to be specific.

Here's the official explain

A Dissipating is not a transitive verb, so acoustic energy cannot function as its object.

B This version of the sentence is wordy, awkward, and indirect; from having... by erroneously suggests that the boundaries in the ocean are attempting to dissipate sound energy.

C Correct. Here, acoustic energy is effectively modified by the participial prevented from dissipating....

D This version of the sentence is wordy, awkward, and indirect; being dissipated as a result of makes it unclear whether the boundaries contribute to energy loss or prevent it.

E This version of the sentence nonsensically explains that sound prevents the dissipation of its own energy.
