Radio stations with radio data system (RDS) technology broadcast special program information that only radios with an RDS feature can receive. Between 1994 and 1996, the number of RDS radio stations in Verdland increased from 250 to 600. However, since the number of RDS-equipped radios in Verdland was about the same in 1996 as in 1994, the number of Verlanders receiving the special program information probably did not increase significantly.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. few if any of the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994 broadcast to people with RDS-equipped radios living in areas not previously reached by RDS stations.

B. In 1996 most Verdlanders who lived within the listening area of an RDS station already had a radio equipped to receive RDS.

C. Equipping a radio station with RDS technology does not decrease the station’s listening area.

D. In 1996 Verlanders who did not own radios equipped to receive RDS could not receive any programming from the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994.

E. The RDS radio stations in Verdland in 1996 did not all offer the same type of programming.

well my guess was D ; but after 4 mins i drilled down to A...

actually the stimulus states that the reason why the no. of people recieving the program has not increased is that
the number of radios has not increased. To conclude this there must be assumption like on of the following :

-Before or during 1994 people didn't have radios which had RDS (coz they might initially be having radios that had RDS , in that case once the technology is there
those radios which were not used that much before 1994 would be used more by 1996 )

- Now like A says that though there is incease in the number of stations but the "covegare" is small hence those people with RDS radios who were not recieving any signal before still continue to recieve no signal and hence no increase.

A. few if any of the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994 broadcast to people with RDS-equipped radios living in areas not previously reached by RDS stations.
Correct. This confirms that the new radio stations did not reach out to a large number of untapped listeners during this time.

B. In 1996 most Verdlanders who lived within the listening area of an RDS station already had a radio equipped to receive RDS.
Out of scope. This doesn't draw a parallel with the earlier situation -- in 1994, what number of Verdlanders in the listening area were equipped with RDS-enabled radios?

C. Equipping a radio station with RDS technology does not decrease the station’s listening area.
Not an assumption. If equipping a radio station with RDS decreased the station's listening area, there would be fewer listeners in 1996 than there were in 1994. Howeover, this is not the assumption we're looking for, as the argument doesn't depend on it (an assumption HAS to be true). Negate this, and you'll see the argument will still hold.

D. In 1996 Verlanders who did not own radios equipped to receive RDS could not receive any programming from the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994.
[Edit in explanation]There is a subtle premise shift here. The conclusion limits its scope to "special programs" -- which can only be received by radios equipped with RDS, whereas this statement talks about not receiving ANY programming from RDS-enabled stations.

E. The RDS radio stations in Verdland in 1996 did not all offer the same type of programming.
Irrelevant

B. In 1996 most Verdlanders who lived within the listening area of an RDS station already had a radio equipped to receive RDS. -> this is out ,this does not contribute to concl

C. Equipping a radio station with RDS technology does not decrease the station’s listening area. -> this is out

D. In 1996 Verlanders who did not own radios equipped to receive RDS could not receive any programming from the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994. -> i wanted to select this but A beats this option ,this negated does not affect the argument

E. The RDS radio stations in Verdland in 1996 did not all offer the same type of programming. -> IRRELEVANT

Clearly A

If equipping a station with RDS makes the station's listening area less, obviously we need more no. of stations now. But as per C, it DOES NOT DECREASE, in that case there is no need for new stations.

Got it?

Hello Marcab,

For sure, but can u shed some light about the discrepancy in the stem  :
the number of RDS radio stations in Verdland increased from 250 to 600 // the number of Verlanders receiving the special program information probably did not increase significantly.

It says that , the number of RDS radios were the same and number of radio stations increased .. But since num of radio's were the same , there was no SIGNIFICANT increase in number of verlanders receiving the program info. Since there wasnt a SIGNIFICANT increase , the author assumes that there MIGHT be a slight/negligible increase . That's precisely what option A says - "FEW IF ANY of stations began broadcasting it to people in areas that were not previously broadcasted" . "Few if any" would explain why there was only a minimal change in the number of receivers of that station.

Hope that helps

In my opinion , it is irrelevant , cos in the whole argument , there is no mention of ANY Program . He only talks about special program that RDS Station broadcasts and RDS Radios receive.
D talks about NON RDS radios , not receiving ANY programs .
But we are asked to figure out why did the num of verlanders (with RDS radios) receiving special program that this RDS station broadcast, not increase significantly . what happens to people with Non-RDS radios regarding ANY program is irrelevant.

The choice "few if any " is equivalent to almost none at all. Given that, it is saying that the radio stations did not broadcast in areas other than the coverage which existed. So, the radio stations did not increase their footprint. The number of RDS radios also was about the same from 94 to 96. This proves the argument..

D reiterates that without RDS radio you cannot receive RDS programs.

C. Equipping a radio station with RDS technology does not decrease the station’s listening area.Even if it would decrease the listening area... the argument claims the number of the radios equipped with RDS remained the same, therefore this fact wouldnt have any influence...

D. In 1996 Verlanders who did not own radios equipped to receive RDS could not receive any programming from the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994. We already know from the argument that you cannot receive any RDS programme without RDS equipment on your radio...

E. The RDS radio stations in Verdland in 1996 did not all offer the same type of programming. Who cares about the type of programming.

The assumption must be something NOT stated in the argument. Something that links
1 the nr. of stations,
2 nr of radios
3 and nr of people receiving the programme...
4 eventually the period btw 94 and 96

Hope this helps
