Special Questions

You are all familiar with usual types of GMAT questions: Number Properties, Remainders, Overlapping sets, etc. We have all these categories HERE. But sometimes on the test comes a question which does not fall into ordinary categories, combines several categories/concepts or is a subcategory of a larger topic. These questions are harder to solve and require different skills or/and unorthodox approaches. Below is a directory of such questions:

Please suggest other special categories you are interested to see here. Thank you.

Operations/functions defining algebraic/arithmetic expressions

This type of question defines some function and asks to find the value of some expression involving that function. For example, "If the operation @ is defined by x@y=\sqrt{xy} for all positive numbers x and y, then (5@45)@60 ="

Symbols Representing Arithmetic Operation

This type of questions hides one of the arithmetic operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) behind some symbol and asks to find the value of some expression involving that symbol or determining that symbol. For example, "The operation* represents either addition, subtraction, or multiplication of integers, what is the value of 1*0?". This type of question are most like to come in DS section.

Though this type of questions are a part of Statistics and Sets problems collected HERE (DS) and HERE (PS), thought it would be helpful to sort out standard deviation questions from these collections.

Trailing zeros

Trailing zeros are a sequence of 0's in the decimal representation of a number, after which no other digits follow. For example: 125,000 has 3 trailing zeros. The questions about trailing zeros present an expression with factorial of some number (n!) or with the product of several numbers and ask to find the number of trailing zeros fot that expression.

Power of a number in a factorial

These questions are like trailing zeros questions, except that they ask us to find not the power of 10 in some expression but the power of some other number (2, 3, 6, ...)
