St. Gallen vs. Mannheim vs. RSM [#permalink] New post 24 Sep 2008, 04:33
I am taking the GMAT on Monday and therefore trying to compile the list of 5 scholls that will receive my score report. The first four are clear: INSEAD, IMD, Oxford, Cambridge. The fifth should be a safer school, again offering a one-year program in Europe.

So, what do you think?

I went for St Gallen. I've heard it's the strongest in the Western EU/Germanesc countries.

Interesting u have chosen the same 4 schools that I sent my GMAT score to. I additionally sent it to LBS as well.

Nerdboy -> We'are applying to almost the same schools (except that I probably won't apply to IMD).

I'd say the choice is between St Gallen and RSM.
Mannheim is, in my opinion, behind these two programmes.

I think that most RSM graduates work inThe Netherlands and that most St Gallen graduates work in Switzerland. You may want to check their placement report to be sure.

I went for RSM (even though I won't apply there: lack of fit), because it is more established. ST Gallen is quite new.

EDIT:
RSM geographical destinations of MBA's graduates in %:
NL -> 28
UK ->9
Germany -> 5
Other Western E ->14

ST GALLEN geographical destinations of MBA's graduates in %:
Switzerland -> 74
Germany -> 13

Mannheim has interesting partner schools and offers a very international experience as part of the program. However, this might be the only thing going for it.

St. Gallen has excellent reputation, but if it is confined in Germany/Switzerland, I am having doubts. My German is primitive and although it can improve, I would not have much of a competitive advantage over the native speakers.

RSM looks good in terms of brand recognition, and in terms of international placement of alumni. Here 'good' means 'good for a 3rd tier school'. On the other hand, it is not doing well in the rankings (I admit this is a strong factor for me).

I'll give it a couple more days, plenty of time till Monday 8-)

RSM and Mannheim are just as confined to their regional markets, if not more, than St. Gallen. We have about 45% of the class whose German is primitive. There are opportunities at the large MNCs and Swiss firms in Switzerland for English-only speakers, in which English is spoken as the corporate language. However, you are correct that if you don't know much German, you put yourself at a disadvantage against the native speakers and other advanced non-native speakers.

We are currently receiving German classes 2.5 hours/session/week, and there are two sections of beginner and intermediate. I don't think it's enough, and although I'm an intermediate German speaker, I think at least 2 sessions/week is the bare minimum in order to improve proficiency. The best thing you could do for yourself is take an intensive German course before the MBA for at least 1 month. This is 3.5 hours/day, Monday-Friday. We are recommending to the MBA Program Director to provide this option to students next year. It won't be for a month, but I think they might go for a 2-week intensive course.

St. Gallen will be receiving my score within 20 days.

Trader1, you'd better graduate and get an awesome job ASAP, else I'm not applying ;) Just joking. Well, half joking.
