Startup experience and only 1 job on a resume [#permalink] New post 07 Nov 2012, 11:33
Hello,

I have been working for a startup in NYC for the past two years. To be fair, we may not qualify as a start up anymore as we have a massive market share and are expanding. But my question is, does it make sense to continue with the same company and help her grow and expand? Or do MBA programs look for a diversified resume and a history of someone taking a risk? At this pace, when I apply in a few years I would have only 1 real job on my resume post graduation.

If it makes any difference I hope to to apply to a top 10 program. I graduated NYU with a double major in economics and history and a 3.8 GPA. I hope to have about 4 years of work experience under my belt if all goes well.

Thanks

It's not necessarily bad to have just one job on your resume. And it's neither better nor worse than six. What matters rather is 1. Your achievements 2. The leadership you have 3. Your responsibilities 4. Your growth.

should you leave or stay? It depends on what your alternatives are...
But in general, I always tell people - choose your job for your job - you can always fit it into your MBA story later (although of course if you get a chance to work at McKinsey or something like that, jump on it :) )
