Statistics Question?? Kind of urgent.. [#permalink] New post 18 Mar 2013, 16:29
Hey guys. Kinda having trouble answering these for SAT..

a.) If the average of four numbers is between 5 and 7, then the sum of the four numbers could be any one of the following except:
1.)20 1/2
2.)22
3.)25 1/2
4.)27
5.)29

b.) on average, 48 out of 100 families in a certain town own two cars. At this rate, how many out of 150 families do not own two cars?

c.) In a grove, 8% of the apples picked are spoiled. On average,there will be 2 spoiled apples out of how many picked?

d.)A store which formerly sold peppers at 3 pounds for $2.00 changed the price to 2 pounds for $1.50. If y is the percent increase in the price per pound, y=?

5.)29

Avg = Sum/(Total number of elements)
if Sum = 29 then Avg = 29/4 which is more than 7 so not possible.
So, Answer will be E

100 -> 48
150 -> 48*150/100 = 72 families

8% are spoiled
means out of 100: 8 apples are spoiled
or, 8 spoiled -> out of 100
so, 2 spoiled -> out of 2*100/8 = 25 apples

originally
3 pound for $2
so, 1 pound for (2/3)$

Now
2 pound for 1.5$
so, 1 pound for (1.5/2)$ = (3/4)$

Percentage increase = ((new price - old price)/old price)* 100
= ((3/4) - (2/3) /(2/3)) *100
= 12.50%

hope it helps!

Well I guess it can be applied to GMAT... but nothing about these questions seems GMATy... maybe question 1 (with answer choices!) but even that would most likely be "which of these cannot be the range" or something a little more intricate. I was helping my cousin with her homework not long ago and this was the type of thing we were doing. It made me laugh when I saw this.

Like you said, as long as someone learns from it!
