I think they are very yield conscious - they waitlisted me without an interview even though I thought i had excellent essays (esp. essay 3) and a decent profile/background. I feel it's important to show your ongoing commitment to Stern via a waitlist letter (given that you have been WL'd).
I'm in the same boat in that I thought my essays (esp. essay 3) were quite good, and my profile also fits pretty well. I plan to write a letter and am considering what, if anything, else to do.
The thing is, Stern usually makes the call before the interview. After interview, it's mostly acceptance or ding. I think last year 25% of applicants were interviewed, and 80% of them were admitted. I read this somewhere, but I can't point out exactly.
Hope things will work out for each of us! I've been interviewed last week and waiting for a decision.
