Still Time for Success at Cornell – Rolling Deadline June 3, 2015Some candidates are surprised to learn that in addition to its three “Rounds”, Cornell Johnson has a rolling component to its MBA admissions, whereby you can apply to its full-time MBA program. That rolling application process ends in early June. That is, the last date on which you can submit an application is June 3, 2015.
Is it worth submitting an application to Cornell in the rolling cycle? Yes. There are an approximate 30 seats that the Admissions Committee will be allocating still as a part of that cycle. For you to be one of the fortunate applicants for the full-time class, however, you must be mindful that many other applicants who received unhappy news about their other Round 2 applications may be submitting applications to Cornell also. Cornell Johnson offers a fabulous program, has wonderful faculty and students, and is ranked very well.
Given Cornell’s attractiveness, you should not throw a Cornell Johnson rolling application together in a haphazard sort of way. Put great thought into your application and make sure it appears well-honed. You want to convey to the Admissions Committee that you truly want to become a part of the Cornell Johnson family and that you have a lot to offer.
What is one of the biggest mistakes people can make when applying to Cornell Johnson? Putting too little thought into the first essay. That essays is as follows:
1. You are the author for the book of Your Life Story. In 2000 characters (including formatting characters) or less, please write the table of contents for the book in the space provided or upload it as an attachment. Note: approach this essay with your unique style. We value creativity and authenticity.
Some candidates are lulled into complacency given the short word count. Two thousand characters is approximately 300 words. But, this essay should be working fully for you and should go a long ways in piquing the Admissions Committee’s desire to interview you and admit you. Use this essay content well!
Similarly, the second essay in the Cornell Johnson application is also very important. It reads:
2. What is the job that you would like to have immediately upon graduating with your MBA? (2000 character limit)
Candidates should be aware that this can be a “weeder” question – meaning, your response can give the Admissions Committee a reason to reject you. You want to make sure that your short-term goal is attractive, sensible (given your long-term goals) and attainable (given your prior experience). If the Admissions Committee thinks that you cannot secure your short-term step, they may fear that they will have a difficult time placing you in a post-MBA job, which reduces their incentive to admit you in the first place.
Just as is the case with applying to Columbia Graduate School of Business at this time of the year, you should be mindful that at Cornell Johnson the Admissions Committee has already allocated many seats, and therefore it is crucial that you present a strong application – from the essays to the resume to the application form. Your recommendations should also be exemplary.
