Studies show that repeated exposure to an allergen can trigger anaphylaxis. This condition, in which an allergic person becomes overly sensitized to the allergen in question, can provoke a life-threatening reaction via even minimal exposure.

Which of the following is the best analogy for the process described above?

A. People with unhealthy diets are much more susceptible to conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure than is the general population.
B. Because minor earthquakes can weaken the existing infrastructure in an area, a series of minor earthquakes sometimes causes much more extensive damage than might otherwise be expected.
C. Peanut allergy sufferers do not need to ingest peanut products in order to experience an allergic episode; a reaction can also be triggered by touching peanuts or peanut oils.
D. Scientists theorize that global warming, a gradual increase in the average worldwide temperature, is the primary cause of the increasing occurrence of extreme weather patterns in the last two decades.
E. Drivers who speed regularly are more likely to be caught than those who speed only occasionally.

OA and OE after some discussion.

B- Just as repeated exposure worsen a person's ability to resist the allergen and becomes life-threatening so too is minor earthquakes weakening the infrastructures and causing a greater havoc than a single earthquake

One more for B.
Reason: Repeated earthqueakes making the area weak and prone to larger distructions.

Agree with B. Repeated exposure to an allergen leads to an enhanced reaction to it, which can cause even a small amount of exposure to be lethal -> repeated exposure to small earthquakes leads to a weakened ability to withstand them, which can cause even a small earthquake to do major damage.

X is caused by Y. Y is caused by a minor amount of X.

B - earthquakes have caused the weakening of the infrastructure. therefore even a minor earthquake (equivalent to minor exposure in QS) can cause damage.

Sure Deepthis!

The questions asks us to mimic the reasoning of the argument. How does the author present his argument?

Repeated exposure to an allergen can trigger anaphylaxis (can be life threatening).
Then even minimal exposure can be life threatening.
(Repeated exposure reduces the resistance of the person against the allergen. Finally even minimal exposure of the allergen can be life threatening)

B. Because minor earthquakes can weaken the existing infrastructure in an area, a series of minor earthquakes sometimes causes much more extensive damage than might otherwise be expected.

Minor earthquakes weaken the infra so series of minor earthquakes keep weakening the infra more and more. Finally, even that small earthquake in the series can cause much more damage than you would expect. Just like minimal exposure can also be life threatening after repeated exposure to allergen.

C. Peanut allergy sufferers do not need to ingest peanut products in order to experience an allergic episode; a reaction can also be triggered by touching peanuts or peanut oils.

Minimal exposure to peanuts can produce an allergic reaction. But here, 'repeated exposure to something before' is missing.. As far as the argument goes, we don't know whether peanut allergy sufferers develop this condition by repeated exposure to peanuts or even without much exposure. In fact, the way it is worded, I would like to believe that it doesn't matter how much they get exposed to peanuts beforehand.. if someone has an allergy to peanuts, it will be triggered by even the tiniest exposure...

B --> Stimulus presents a case of repeated occurrence of a cause (exposure to allergens) which is paralleled only by the ans choice B which states the case of repeated occurrence of earthquakes.

Studies show that repeated exposure to an allergen can trigger anaphylaxis.

Something can trigger something else.

This condition, in which an allergic person becomes overly sensitized to the allergen in question, can provoke a life-threatening reaction via even minimal exposure.

The previous condition (the trigger in question) even when a minimal exposure occurs, we have the effects described.

Which of the following is the best analogy for the process described above?

(A)People with unhealthy diets are much more susceptible to conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure than is the general population.

This comparison is irrelevant

(B)Because minor earthquakes can weaken the existing infrastructure in an area, a series of minor earthquakes sometimes causes much more extensive damage than might otherwise be expected.

Correct. The earthquake can trigger something, and other earthquakes represent the minimal exposure of the stimulus

(C)Peanut allergy sufferers do not need to ingest peanut products in order to experience an allergic episode; a reaction can also be triggered by touching peanuts or peanut oils.

This behaviour do not say nothing about the trigger and the minimal exposure

(D)Scientists theorize that global warming, a gradual increase in the average worldwide temperature, is the primary cause of the increasing occurrence of extreme weather patterns in the last two decades.

Irrelevant

(E)Drivers who speed regularly are more likely to be caught than those who speed only occasionally.

Irrelevant

please help me ustand this .. i am not quiet convinced. the option C where the the most minima exposure , in fact the very sight of the peanuts is causing this allergy. The stress on the extent of the sensitivity is very clear when compared to the option B where constant earthquakes which is emphasizing the consistency of the act more than any thing . Also the trigger in option to me is also clear the exposure to Peanuts

+1 for B.

Option C is a trap answer. Beware of it.
