Hello:

I am new here, and would like some suggestion on how to go about planning my study for the GMAT. I am not your typical 25-35 yr old GMAT test taker, but rather someone who has been out of school for almost 20 years, with kids in Middle to High school, and a full time job. Any ideas/suggestion would help in my attempt to keep my study time as productive as possible. I am not sure if I should start on brushing up the fundamentals (Math, grammar), or rather keep taking practice tests as most of the test takers seem to suggest. I did take the diagnostic GMATPrep, and the results were very discouraging.

I would suggest to review core concepts first, especially in Quant. A great book to get started with is called The Ultiamte Math refresher.

Sentence correction also requires reviewing some of the basics.

wow, you gotta be in your middle to upper 40s now ! Isn't it too late to do an MBA right now ? or I bet it's for a PhD. anyways, as I've always believed: getting a low score in GMAT or GMATprep indicates a great room for improvements. So that's good news.

Go over the basics for math and verbal:

Math: try the kaplan math workbook or PR

Verbal: definately the MGMAT SC book + crack the GMAT from PR or the full MGMAT series.

Overall: get the OG11, OG11-verbal, OG11-math, and reinstall GMATprep and take the tests over and over again for more practice.

Thanks for your suggestion. So, to answer my question, my strategy has to be practice with the test questions primarily. I am going after an MBA because I am stuck in middle management with an engineering degree, and hence would like to broaden my options.

Thanks for your advice. I think I do have to get back to basics and spend time on reviews, before I plunge into doing a lot of practice GMAT tests.
