1. The majority of the students in this class ARE/IS smart.
a. ARE
b. IS

2. A majority of the students in the class ARE/IS smart.
a. ARE
b. IS

Can anyone explain the answers also , please.

The majority of .... has to be singular as it indicates a majority group and group is singular. B is the answer

"A majority of students ..."has to be plural as it indicates students in large numbers collectively. A is the answer.

BTW, A/THE number obeys the same rule.
THE NUMBER OF ADMITTED APPLICANTS grows rapidly.
A NUMBER OF PEOPLE leave our city.
