Surprised by my GMAT [#permalink] New post 13 Dec 2011, 02:15
Hi Friends,

I am writing to you not to scare any one or supporting a misconception about GMAT Verbal. I am not able to understand where did i lack while writing my GMAT and preparing for it.
I used the following resources

Quant:
1. Veritas
2. Sandeep Gupta (700-800)
3. GMAT Prep

Verbal
Manhattan
GMAT Prep
Powerscore Bible for CR
Sandeep Gupta (700-800) for SC/CR

I took the following tests with score against each
MGMAT 1 660
MGMAT 2 720
MGMAT 3 660
MGMAT 4 680
MGMAT 5 640
MGMAT 6 710
MGMAT 1 720
MGMAT 2 710
MGMAT 3 750
GMAT Prep 1 670
GMAT Prep 2 710
GMAT Prep 1 (2nd att.) 720
Kaplan 1 660
Kaplan 1 Sec. Att 710

And to my surprise i scored a 640 today. Last time when i scored a 640 in my practice test I was totally frustrated and infact finished verbal section by not even reading the section carefully and finished the verbal section in 30 mins. Infact i took a test yesterday evening and scored a 750. whoo....whom can i blame for my failure if not me :(

Guys, I am not able to understand what mistake i did today and what should be my next steps. I welcome all thoughts/ plans/ sympathy (though practically its of no use).

Hi,

The way I see it, you are improving. There could be several factors as to why your score dropped. You could be doing really well in some areas, while there is at least one area you did not master. Hence, when you do not get as many question from the area you are not good at, your score tends to get higher. My advice to you is to figure out the area you are not good at, read that part of the guide with more care and do more problems.

Also, you mentioned that you did a CAT day before and scored 750. Well, let me tell you something. Take GMAT as a marathon. When you run marathon, you do not run it twice in two days

Your brain is probably tired and thus it is harder to concentrate.

My advice is that you need to get some rest from taking tests and cover your weak areas. You are doing well and I think you will make it. Good luck!

Dude,

What was your sectional breakup? Did you finish 700-800 Quant by Sandeep Gupta ?

a.) Your GMAT Prep average was 690. So you have underscored by 50 points.

b.) It appears that you have stressed too much on tests and not enough on fundamentals. My theory is that by giving 5-10 tests you can increase your points by 20 - 30 points maximum from the theoretical base. Unless you raise your theoretical level higher more tests are not that productive.

If Verbal is your problem:

Consider practising 500 SC and 500 CR problems from good resources and thoroughly revieweing them. Then get back to tests and see your performance jumb.
