The direction is the main subject: it’s singular and its verb should be was; in which the Earth and the other solid planets - Mercury, Venus, and Mars – is the plural subject of the sub-clause and its verb should be the plural spin; In addition, the correct idiom is determined by

(A) spins were determined from --------- both verbs are wrong; determined from is unidiomatic
(B) spins were determined because of ------- both verbs are wrong
(C) spins was determined through ------------ spins is wrong
(D) spin was determined by -------------------- correct choice; both verbs are correct; idiom determined by is right
(E) spin was determined as a result of ------- both verbs are correct; as a result of is unidiomatic

You are right. OA is D. There are 2 subjects and 2 verbs and the correct option should have "spin was".

Ya you are right... I too go with OA 'D'.
I gotta add few more info. Pls correct me if i'm wrong.

(B) spins were determined because of ---- 'because of' idiom is replacement of 'due to'.. so this doesn't give complete meaning

Hey mandy:

The direction in which the Earth and the other solid planets - Mercury, Venus, and Mars - spin was determined by collision with giant celestial bodies in the early history of the solar system.

There are two sets of subjects and verbs. I've color coded them..

direction (singular) = was (singular)
Earth and the other solid planets (plural) = spin (plural)
remember, and can combine two or more nouns into a plural entity.

You help me with quant I help you with verbal :-D

The moment you say earth and other solid planets, the phrase turns plural. Hence earth is just not the only subject ; and denotes plurality
