taking an online calculus course before applying? [#permalink] New post 03 Feb 2014, 22:22
Hi all,

I took calculus II in college but received a B- in the course. While I was good at math in high school the professor was notorious for giving out low grades and combined with not being familiar with college teaching methods I just didn't do too well. While I did get a 50 on quant on the GMAT, I was wondering if it'd be worth taking a supplemental calculus course prior to applying. I work pretty heavy hours and travel quite a bit for work, so an online course may be best suited for me. However, I'm not sure if that's stigmatized, and it's also quite expensive (versus a community college). Do you all think it's worth it?

If professor is grade stingy but you think you learned the content I don't see any reason why you should repeat it unless you are worried about B- in your academic transcript and would like to show that you can indeed get A+ on calculus II.

Very good quant score btw...

Hey mate,

What I'm about to say comes with a caveat (what kind of consultant would I be if I didn't?! :)). Don't worry about the B-. Given your quant score and the fact that you feel a B- is rough leads me to believe your overall GPA is probably pretty good. Right? If I'm wrong, then that's a different conversation but I'll wait for you to disagree first.

Between your 50Q and the fact that you took Calc II no school will be wondering if you can hack the math side of things. As long as you understand what a differential is and how to calculate it, you should be fine.

Like I said, if I'm wrong, let me know and we can take it from there!
