Tanya prepared 4 different letters to be sent to 4 different [#permalink] New post 28 Jan 2006, 00:47
Tanya prepared 4 different letters to be sent to 4 different addresses. For each letter, she prepared an envelope with its correct address. If the 4 letters are to be put into the 4 envelopes at random, what is the probability that only 1 letter will be put into the envelope with its correct address?

1. 1/24
2. 1/8
3. 1/4
4. 1/3
5. 3/8

I got 1/3

Total cases = 4! = 24

Cases when exactly one letter is in its correct address envelope = 4* 2 = 8

L1-L2-L3-L4

K1-K3-K4-K2
K1-K4-K2-K3

These are only two cases when only first letter is in enevelope (which is its correct envelope). So for all four letter, cases are 4* 2= 8
