Target schools with low gpa, high gmat [#permalink] New post 08 Jun 2011, 15:53
I need help select reasonable target schools for my profile, to get into the best ones I can!

1) Work experience:
Three years Risk analyst at multi-national corporation, on overseas assignment.
Got promoted and won division-wide award.

2) GMAT:
690
Quant 48, Verbal 35, Writing 6
Prefer not to retake.

3) College info:
BS in Economics from large national university in US.
Low GPA: 2.45 overall, 2.55 in major.
Ace-less hand with mostly B's and C's! No excuse!

4) Extra-curricular:
Passionate about speech and debate.
Initiated peer training programs for accent neutralization and presentation skills.

5) Certifications:
None at present.
CIA (Internal Audit) possible near-term, CPA longer term.

6) Your target programs.
Good question. Here's what I am thinking at this point, no clue whether these are good matches.
Part-time MBA programs:
a) Michigan Ross
b) USC Marshall
Full-time everywhere else:
c) Duke Fuqua
d) Indiana Kelley
e) Notre Dame Mendoza
f) Vanderbilt
g) Babson Olin
h) ASU Carey
i) Thunderbird

7) Your post-MBA goal.
General Management in Multi-national Corporations for International Business Operations.

Expert's post
blaw,

Thanks for your post.

While I understand there are not excuses for your low GPA, can you provide a few reasons? Did you just not care? Have time management issues that have since been resolved. I think you need to provide the reasons for the low GPA in your app while taking responsibility for possible mistakes made.

With the exception of Duke's full-time program, you are pretty realistic. A few recent A's would really help your application. If you can enroll in a 1-4 business related courses and earn A's in them, you would show that whatever contributed to the poor undergrad performance is history and make it easier for the schools to rely on your GMAT and work experience as indicative of your capabilities.
