Teaching with a Phd [#permalink] New post 27 Apr 2012, 14:32
Hi guys,
I am starting my MBA in the fall and plan to work in finance afterwards. However down the road I would love to teach at a university. It seems that Phd candidates all want to do research. I'm sure I will have a lot of interest in research by then but my main motivation will be so that I can teach.
I have taught high school for 3 years, have a 760 GMAT and plan to get good grades in my MBA
So my questions are:
Do people ever apply for Phd mainly because they want to teach?
After working in industry for about 10 years, what might I have to do to be a worthy candidate?
Will I need to retake the GMAT since I will be applying 5 years after taking the test?
Thanks in advance!

The PhD in business disciplines is structured to train students for academic research and a main part of any academic appointment is teaching. Technically, you would be eligible to teach as an Instructor with an MBA but would likely not place in a tenure track position. If you wish to expand your career possibilities in business academia, then a PhD is necessary. To apply for programs, you would need a current GMAT score, letters of recommendation from academic sources (Keep in touch with your professors!) and must explain in your application essay a desire to perform academic research. Linking your professional experience to research interests could also be helpful to your application.
