reason i could think:

the chemical composition of tektites is compared with that of terrestrial lava. so C or E. but E unnecessary 's after lava. So C.

B and C are the best, no doubt.
I for one would vote for C. Never have I seen DIFFER THAN on the test though such construction is considered OK by some grammar books.

C is correct

BUT

I think the reason behind this answer lies in the actual meaning of the sentence. We should use "they" to refer to the Tektites, otherwise meaning of the sentence changes

I think the answer is C due to :

a. 'different from' - is an idiomatic phrase
b. 'is different from that of any terrestrial lava' - compaires 'apple to apple'. In fact, I noticed that every time there's a comparison, the right answer would be the one that containes '..... that of ...'
