Reporting that one of its many advisors had been detained by police, the organization expressed its support and reaffirmed its belief that the advisor would soon be released.

A. its many advisors had been detained by police
B. its many advisors has been detained by police
C. its many advisors is the recently police-detained
D. their many advisors is detained by police

Visitors to Toronto have often gone to the top of the CN tower, the world’s tallest freestanding structure, and see the entire city beneath them.

A. and saw the entire city beneath them
B. and saw all of the entire city beneath them
C. and saw beneath them the entire city
D. and seen beneath them the entire city
E. and seen the entire city beneath them

With explanation please!

Hey, do try to remember underlining the part to be corrected ! We'll do less guessing that way ! :-D

E. their many advisors had been detained by police

We'll want to use had been detained as the organization has expressed support and reaffirmed belift (past tense) after the arrest ( an even before the organization's show of support).

This leaves us with (A) and (E). Organization is singular, so we'll need its instead of their. So (A) is my choice.

B. and saw all of the entire city beneath them
C. and saw beneath them the entire city
D. and seen beneath them the entire city
E. and seen the entire city beneath them

Visitors have gone to the top, so we'll need seen instead of saw. (E) sounds better than (D), so i'll go with (E).

I'll go B and E.

In the first one, although the detainment did happen before the expression of support, the detainment is ongoing, hence i would choose the present perfect tense 'has' over the past perfect tence 'had'.

For the second one, I'll go E. Same reasons as above.

Why A is not correct for the second SC? Don't we use simple past wehntwo events are in past anf the first one is in past perfect?
Thanks

You need has been because he is still in custody and organization is reporting it now. and look at the underlined portion which tells he would be released. Just keep simple past and present perfect, no need to go in past perfect unless there are 2 actions (one done in the past before the other)
