Tenses, Or/and, anything versus nothing [#permalink]
08 Nov 2004, 12:14
The commission has directed advertisers to restrict the use of the world ‘natural’ to foods that do not contain color or flavor additives, chemical preservatives, or nothing that has been synthesized.
(A) or nothing that has been
(B) nor anything that was
(C) and nothing that is
(D) or anything that has been
(E) and anything

D for me.
We need 'anything', not 'Nothing'. Leaves us with B D E. There is no 'NOT' or "Neither" for a 'nor'. So, B is out.
D is lengthy but conveys meaning clearly compared to E(which is also awkward).

Venks,
Quote: (D) or anything that has been (E) and anything
I intially went for D, but finally voted for E thinking that it was concise.
I was clear with the usage of 'anything'. I also felt 'that' was necessary.
But in the end thought that 'and' suited the sentence better.
E looks awkward but still I went for it.

I think (D) is correct, becasue isn't we should use "or" to link a number of alternatives?
do not contain color or flavor additives, chemical preservatives, or anything that has been

Paul,
I went in for one logic reason. 'color or flavor additives, chemical preservatives' are all already chemically synthesized substances.
'and anything synthesized' is akward or rather alters meaning and does not recognize the previous mentioned substances that already belong to the same category. This is one reason. Second reason is that 'or' gives the right parallel rhythm...or color, or...or,whatever.

Well, folks, I'm sorry on this one. Please ignore what I said, D should be it. That idiom thing I said was a total blunder, I take it back as I was too quick on jumping to conclusions here.
