I do not think this is normal at all. I only have a few rejections to base this off of, but in general Tepper is VERY kind to applicants and generally prides itself on a warm community feel. It is good to hear that you have identified your weaknesses. I believe the admissions staff at Tepper would offer you some valuable feedback, but it seems you have a pretty clear vision. I personally would use this session more as an advice session like “hey these are my goals, this is my experience, do you think this makes sense and how can an MBA and Tepper specifically be of use”. Of course, this is exactly your short and long-term essay and you don’t want them to write it for you, but you may need a little help wrapping your head around it. I would conduct this call soon but not until you have given some serious thought about what you want to do, where you want to go and why you need an MBA. Even if you are not 100% clear on your future goals, you should think about your past and what your strengths are and where you might want to go.
A general tip someone gave me when I was applying is to create a simplified version of yourself and have your whole application support the traits you want to portray without actually saying it. For example, in my application I emphasized the fact that I find innovative solutions, take decisive action and have a broad base of experience and leadership tools. I want to be a consultant so this all fits with my goal. Sorry for the long response but I like to try and help out.
