"A".
Its not a landmark to be a man or woman, but it may be a landmark "to be a woman and rising professionally".

A expresses it well.

Interesting question,
why not B?
I might go along with E if it's an idiomatic expression.

I was between A & E and went for 'A' but reading baner's warning had to go back to the question. IMO 'A' makes it sound like being a woman is another position she holds, so will go with 'E'.

baner, do you have a OE for this.

I stand corrected. I go with E.

Must be "is a" to be parallel andin the same present tense.

D) that she was a woman
(E) that she is a woman

Yes, I had the same doubt, can someone explain Tyr's query above.

My logic is this.
Sentence is comparing two facts in the past tense. There are no indications that the woman is alive. Safe bet is "was".
E sounds like the woman is still alive. How do we know?

My choice is between D and E for their being ||

E is better because the sentence used present tense.

Won't D elude to saying "that she was a woman, once upon a time" but now she is no longer a woman

If the woman is already dead you can say she is ;)
You have to be sure that she is alive.
Thinking about it more... "new managing editor" kinda hints that we are talking about recent events... and present used...
I'll switch to E too.
