C. There is no issue of subjunctive.

"Number" for plural "fines" and "its" for The administrataion".

Hi mates,

IMO C

Clearly, the right answer should be between C and D (administration is singular, therefore " has" and "its" are required)

Now, between "the number" and "the amount", I'd go with the first one

Can somebody post the grammar associated to "the number" and "the amount"?

OA and Source?

I missed the point.

Amount of fine --> OK
Number of fines --> OK
Amount of fines --> NOK

It should be C

out of C and D....C says number of fines which is equal to number of receipts.....and D says amount of fines which won't be equal to amount of receipts....stimuli talks about the number of fines and not amount therefore D out, C wins.

"fines" is plural not an un-count noun. So with plural noun, number fits properly..

That's correct

But what if they increased fine1 and fine2? then amount of fines is also appropriate right?

How ever, the key is to realize that they are not testing fine vs fines and so it seems that they are talking about the number of fines.

Agree with icandy. For the same reason I chose D assuming that amount has been increased for various kind of fines. Otherwise C is good.

What is the source of this question?

Even though I agree with OA but X has increased "number of fines" blah blah blah...sounds absurd.

C correctly identifies subect verb issues. Also "fines" is a countable noun, hence "number of" is correct.
