I do not like D. There are two possible antecedents of "they" : "walls and floors" and "Romans".

Any comments from experts would be appreciated.

Can someone tell what does THEY in option D refer to? Floors/Walls/ Ancient Romans??

And what's the source of the question?

I am not sure about which IDIOM is correct so as to .... or so that....
C is wrong because of meaning issue....
between A and D....
I choose D

IMO-C,

In D its not clear what "they" refers to.

Correct Answer is D.

Wrong usage of Idiom in option A.It should be "So X as to Y".
Incorrect structure in option B.
In option C "up" should be just after "warm".
Incorrect structure in option E also.

Can someone explain how the idiom works? I also didn't understand why this doesn't work. I know some users have already provided a skeleton example but perhaps a better example can be shared?
