I do not like D. There are two possible antecedents of "they" : "walls and floors" and "Romans".

Any comments from experts would be appreciated.

Can someone tell what does THEY in option D refer to? Floors/Walls/ Ancient Romans??

And what's the source of the question?

Correct Answer is D.

Wrong usage of Idiom in option A.It should be "So X as to Y".
Incorrect structure in option B.
In option C "up" should be just after "warm".
Incorrect structure in option E also.

Can someone explain how the idiom works? I also didn't understand why this doesn't work. I know some users have already provided a skeleton example but perhaps a better example can be shared?

this question is horrible. you should run away from this source as fast as you can. don't look back.

you could argue for any one of (a), (c), or (d) here. all are acceptable.
if this were an official problem, it would say something like "in order to warm the rooms".
