The argument that the dominant form of family structure today is not the nuclear family, but rather it is a family which is modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: the existence of three-generational families, the amount of vertical and horizontal communication between family subunits, and the extent to which family members offer assistance to one another.

(B) family, but is instead a family that is modified and extended, is based on a number of facts: three-generational families exist

Yeah D makes sense. I believe the sentence is not underlined correctly.

"but" followed by "instead" or "rather" is redundant.
A,B and D are out. C changes the maning of the sentence.

yes , sorry it was not underlined properly.

Use of "but rather " is not redundant. check OG explaination of Q77, Q133.
though OA is D here but i believe that in D "family but a modified extended family " should be followed by " , " and then rest of the sentence. to me A sounds better.

punctuation error is preferable to redundancy that I explained.
