The attached diagram shows a arc of a circle who centre is at the origin and a line that is tangent to the circle at (4,3). What is the approximate combined area of the the two shaded regions?

(A) 2.4 (B) 4.4 (C) 6.4 (D) 8.4 (E) none of these

Having a bit of dificulty understanding the wording of the question, but here goes:

gradient of tangent therefore is -3/4

substituting y = mx + b to get y intersect

3 = -3/4 (4) + b
b = 6

substituting y = 0 to get x intersect

0 = -3/4x + 6
x = 4/3(6) = 8

therefore area = 1/2(8) * 6 = 24
