I agree that C seems to be the best answer, but I do not understand what the sentence is saying....is it 72 dollars total, or 72 dollars below what other cars cost....

I think B.

A, D, E are clearly not.

As for C, "below this year's comparably equipped cars and trucks." is unclear. below this year's WHAT OF comparably equipped cars and trucks??? "that" which refers to the "avg price" is missing here.

Another B.

c) The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year's models' average price, or about $72, below this year's comparably equipped cars and trucks.

from the red text, I don't get that the second part of the sentence is also referring to 'next year's price'. So C it out!

In all other cases the average price is wrongly compared to cars trucks and what not

My asnwer is B.

A - "amounting to about $72" is wordy
C - "four-tenths of one percent in next year's models' average price, or about $72" sounds wierd. It should "four-tenths of one percent, or about $72" is correct comparison.

b) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year. (Correct, even though from X to Y has not been used correctly here.Obtained after doing POE)

c)The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year's models' average price, or about $72, below this year's comparably equipped cars and trucks. (wrong comparision)

d)Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent. (correct idiom, but wrong comaparsion)

e) Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

As/WHEN contrasted with/to is unidiomatic. Similarly, As/WHEN compared with/to is also wrong. Correct idiom is Compared with/to and Contrasted with/to.

The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.

Sentence is comparing average price of next year's models to average price of comparably equipped cars and trucks this year. so that means with same feature and everything, next year's model will cost you less than what you are paying today for similar kind of vehicles. A is comparing price to the cost, not OK.

a) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.

b) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year. : "THat of" ensures that you are comparing same entities. Price of X and Y.

c)The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year's models' average price, or about $72, below this year's comparably equipped cars and trucks.

d)Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent.

e) Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

Also the price will decrease from current years price - is okay.
