Love this thread !!! If I may add my personal experience here, I myself am a product of a "top 10" school (In my case it was an IIT actually) but I dont work for a "major IT MNC" and I havent done my share of slum teaching (I am a bad person, what can I say !) and I never played in teams in college and didnt organise any college fest (severe lack of talent) .... none the less right after graduation IT HIT ME : Almost every person I know that I graduated with is an almost perfect copy of the next. Its such a brilliant (read : "boring") system which manages to consistently produce people who are exactly alikeThe more interesting realisation came when I was screening resumes for resruitment, on one hand I had a bunch of IIM-A grads (50% of whom are engineers hence clones of one another with 0 variation) and on the other were Oxford/LSE undergrads .... IT DAWNED UPON ME AGAIN It dont matter if you played in you college team ... it does matter if you were in the national olympics team though !None the less, still proud of my heritage PS : buying a box of sugar free drinking chocolate in Belgium was the worst decision of my life ... too dark aint too good for you

The lessons learnt are : (1) Dont write stuff if its not relevant or if no one cares (I helped organised 2 events in the most obscure college fest you can imagine .... >yaawwn<) (2) Half of Oxford gets admission in order to help the university win the friggin boat race (3) Its easier to get into "the US olympic rowing team" than the "Oxford team for the boat race"

Life is all about being SATISFIED, whether it be beer, chocolates , girls . Law of nature : We are at most stable position when we have lowest energy, and satisfaction gives us relaxation and lowest energy state.

Every Indian has studied from a “top 10” engineering college in India that is not IIT. FACT: There really is no concept of “top 10” engineering college in India. There are the IITs and the rest (Regional bias may prompt people to consider DCE, NIT as “top 10” – let’s not kid ourselves people!)
Every Indian has taught poor children from the slums. FACT: This is the biggest BS I have heard!! I am sure adcoms wonder why India has so many illiterates if EVERY Indian is taking care of some poor little kid. Guys, please think of some more innovative ideas wrt to community involvement. Taming lions would be a good differentiator going forward don’t you think??
EVERY Indian has worked for an IT company that is an MNC/Major/Giant FACT: Well………. Infosys, TCS, Wipro…………………not really “giants” as far as b-school admissions go. Pretty good companies I would agree, but also pretty easy to get in if you went to a “top 10” non IIT engineering school. ( Man…I know I am going to get heat on this one.)
Every Indian was the president/leader/core team member of the cultural/technical festival in their “top 10” non IIT engineering school. FACT: Yeah right…. The truth is that there are a few people who truly organize the shows and the entire college Janta ( student community) tags along as “members”. Obviously in 3-4 years when b-school applications come along they all become the president/leader/core team members
Every Indian wants to go to Kellog FACT: I am sure this is a national conspiracy to rile up Alex Chu. He gets all worked up when he sees an Indian miss the all important second “g” at the end of Kellogg. This is truly awesome!! If a billion people make an effort we can make Kellogg change its name to Kellog!! Then who’d be laughing Alex Chu??!!
Every Indian must provide grades he/she received in class X and XII when requesting profile evaluation FACT:No one cares!! STOP doing it.
Every Indian wants to retake the GMAT. Even after getting 810. FACT: NICE!! Apparently, HBS drools over math geniuses…enough said
Every Indian is awesome. FACT: Every Indian IS AWESOME!!
Disclaimer: I am myself a desi and many of these facts apply to me as well. No offense to anyone. As the stress of applications begins to mount, let us at least laugh at ourselves!! Cheers!! Thanks for sharing.

WOW!!! You just described ME there(well except that I am a guy and an electrical engineer and went to a US News Top 5 engineering school)! And I am Tamizh (and get annoyed when people say the "L" instead of "-zh") too. And I thought I was the only unique piece out there .

I'm late on this thread. Probably should have taken your advice. My problem is I DID actually play for my college cricket team during my undergrad and apart from a little bit of quizzing, I don't have any other extra curricular activities (And it was very difficult to get in since in my college it was dominated my day scholars) And I DID do some volunteering, although only for 2 months. You just ripped apart my MBA dreams.
