The data collected by weather airplanes that fly into the heart of a hurricane are useful mainly for gauging the storm’s structure and strength, not for the speed and the path of their movement.

(A) not for the speed and the path of their movement
(B) not for the speed and path of its movement
(C) not the speed and path of its movement
(D) and not the speed and path of their movements
(E) and not for the speed and the path of its movements

hello friends ,i applied the logic for parallel structure ,and selected the answer choices which have ,useful mainly for ........not for structures,so eliminate (C) and (D) ,but the answer doesnt use this reasoning ,please help in clarifying how to attack this problem .

Sincere thanks in advance .

(A) not for the speed and the path of their movement----use of "their" is wrong
(B) not for the speed and path of its movement------I initially wanted to go for this one. But there is any issue here. There is no paralled word used for guaging. I mean had the sentence used "... not for checking the speed and path of its movment", then I think this option would have been correct.
(C) not the speed and path of its movement----Correct
(D) and not the speed and path of their movements---use of "their" is wrong
(E) and not for the speed and the path of its movements-----same reason as in B above.

A & D are wrong for the use of "their" to refer the storm. D is wrong since "and not for" is needed to maintain the parallelism. Between B & E, E seems correct because B uses "the speed and path" where as it should be "the speed and the path" to refer the spped and path seperately.

I first chose B with the same thinking: parallelism

For X... not for Y.
But as you said, I would need an ING in the Y.

If you have a closer look at another possible structure:

For gauging X, not Y --> you will find a parallel structure
Don't know, just backsolving with the official answer given

If someone has a different point of view, I would like to see why is that the correct answer.

are useful mainly for gauging the storm’s structure and strength, not for gauging the speed and the path of its movement. for gauging is implicitly attached in the sentence and either one can use

the entire for gaunging or two drop it fully . Makes Sense ???

Initially, I also picked E. Thanks for the explanation. C makes sense.

initially i picked B here. BUT after reading Hussain's explanation i narrowed my choice down to C. for gauging needs to be paralleled in underlined part. C is the best choice

Its refers to storm's. Both are in possessive form. It can not refer to airplanes (Plural)
