(A)admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent
(B)admit as members only women who can prove lineal descent
(C)admits as members women who can prove lineal descent
(D)only admit as members women who can prove lineal descent
(E)admits as members women who can prove lineal descent only

A. "The Daughters of the American Revolution" is a singular subject so "admits" matches the singular verb requirement.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.

A. admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent
B. admit as members only women who can prove lineal descent
C. admits as members women who can prove lineal descent
D. only admit as members women who can prove lineal descent
E. admits as members women who can prove lineal descent only

The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, - singular -organization.
=> B and D are out.

E is wrong as it changes the meaning by placing only at the end.

A and C are close but A is correct.

Suppose A is admits as members, only women who can prove lineal descent -> Then I think you can differentiate what is wrong with C.

Only-women-clause modifies members but in c women modifies members that is illogical.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, is the name of an organistion and a proper noun. All names , titles etc are singular in usage although they may contain plural words. Examples:

1 A Mid-Summer Night's Dreams is a comedy by Shakespear
2. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written by Mark Twain
3. The Servants Of Mary is a wide spread organization

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a proper noun and aname of a society; therefore, the verb ha to be singular’ admits’ .drop B and D. We also need the restricting adverb only because it is an important qualification to be admitted. C gets dropped. In E, the placement of ‘only’ at the end distorts the original intent and hence Only A survives

Its very difficult to figure out between option A and E.
How can we we eliminate E saying that it only is not supposed to mean that the daughers might have descended from anything other than American Revolution as well.
In my fast glance E made perfect sense. Please help me resolve this!!

thanks

E is wrong because of the problematic meaning it conveys - the option means that the organization admits women who can prove only one thing - lineal descent - and cannot prove any other thing !

Option A means that the organization admits only those women who prove lineal descent and not any other women.

Hence A is better than E.

Daughters of the American Revolution is a collective noun, so it needs to have singular verb ADMITS (example: Dog barks)
So we can eliminate B and D
E has only towards the end which does not make sense, so eliminate
Between A and C - original sentence has the emphasis on ONLY before women, so we can go with the same. Hence A instead of C
