Can somebody please explain why not A) or B) apart from E)

A) The diet of X was largely vegetarian, and meat rarely.
B) The diet of X was largely vegetarian, and meat was rare.
E) The diet of X was largely vegetarian, with meet as a rarity.

A and B are ambiguous. What is rare? Is the meat cooked rare or is it consumed less frequently?
