I think except A all other imply that "meat was a rarity during classical times"

IMO A though not sure at all.

A. and meat rarely -> and is not onnecting the sentence properly .it appears as if meat were one of the vegetarian

B. and meat was rare -> this does not focus on diet but rather meat

C. with meat as rare -> as rare is not correct

D. meat a rarity ->incomplete no preposition connecting to above sentence

E. with meat as a rarity -> IMO E

one more eg for the above format :
stones are cheap with diamond as an exception

A. and meat rarely

B. and meat was rare

C. with meat as rare

D. meat a rarity

E. with meat as a rarity

A)diet was largely vegitarian and meat rarely -- Awkward not proper construction
B)diet was largely vegitarian and meat was rare
--> changes the meaning.. meat was rare..--> meat was not available..
C)diet was largely vegitarian with meat as rare
D)diet was largely vegitarian meat a rarity --Awkward not proper construction
E)diet was largely vegitarian with meat as a rarity
diet was largely X with Y as a rarity

between C,E

C -- meat as rare ---> meat is not available..
E -- meat as a rarity

rarity (Noun) fact of being rare.

E looks better.

would go with E.
A & B - usage of "and"
C - incorrect as rare
D - incomplete sentence.

OA is E

This SC is testing the concept of Clauses - Independent and dependent clauses.

The diet of the ordinary Greek in classical times was largely vegetarian--vegetables, fresh cheese, oatmeal, and meal cakes
- Is an indpendent clause and it has a list of vegetarian foods.

Now to add a list of Non- Vegetarian food we need a dependent clause.

"and" can be used to join 2 independent clauses.
=> A,B are OUT

We need a clause. A clause has a subject and a verb. D has no verb
=>D is OUT

C changes the meaning of the sentence. The SC means to convey the Greek ate meat rarely. The Sc doesnot talk about the availability of teh meat.

E rules!

The answer has to be E.

A typical question of Logical Reasoning.
