Here is Master GMAT's explanation... I couldn't really follow their steps... I kept getting (a)

If X is 1/12 inches long, there are [(1/12)inches /12] = [1/144]ft in X. Since (1/12) = Sqrt(1/144) the number of inches is equal to the square root of the number of feet in X, and this is the correct answer.

I'll post the official explanation below.

Say # of inches in X is $$a$$, then # of feet in X is $$\frac{a}{12}$$, (since 1 foot =12 inches).
Question: the length of X, in inches = $$a$$ = ?

We are told that $$a$$ is equal to the square root of $$\frac{a}{12}$$ --> $$a=\sqrt{\frac{a}{12}}$$ --> $$a^2=\frac{a}{12}$$ --> $$a=\frac{1}{12}$$.

Thanks. That actually makes sense!

Thank you for the explanation, very helpful, but is this really a sub-600 level question?

Inches = sq root of feet and not the other way around. It is worded to be misleading.

Even i also have the same doubt.

12 inches make 1 feet

logically, the value of # of inches should have square root as against the larger denomination feet...

I'll post the official explanation below.

X inches = \sqrt{X in feet}

1 inch = 1/12 foot
X inches= X/12 feet
X inches= \sqrt{X/12}

Squaring both sides:-

X^2= X/12
X= 1/12

D is the answer

x inches = sqrt(x/12)
x^2 = [sqrt(x/12)]^2
12x^2 -x =0
x(12x-1)=0
x=0 or x=1/12
