D for compraing earnings of women with earnings of men, rather than comparing directly with men.

C. much below men in spite of diminishing educational differences comparing earnings with men
D. well below those of men in spite of diminishing educational differences right one
E. below mens despite their educational differences that are diminishing the same as for (C)

A, C and E compares the earnings of women with men which is wrong.
Between B and D, "those" is the correct one - so D.
