Anand takes the pole position here...

In this series, the verbs not underlined are going and reaching. Because of this, we can eliminate all answer choices in which the verb cause does not follow the "-ing" pattern. Causing, choice C, is the only option with the gerund or "-ing" form, thus making it the correct answer.

Interesting. I was not confident on this question at all. I was leaning towards paralellism but the antecedent<->pronoun agreement struck me.
The "it" I am not sure what it refers to "the century" or "the emergence"
So I stayed with C.

Only C maintains parallelism.... going , reaching and causing

All others fail to maintain parallel structure.
