IMO A

The correct idiom is "both X and Y". So, B, D and E are out for using incorrect idiom "both X as well as Y".

C is out since its starting with "this". If you put the option C in the sentence, then "revealed this most bland...." sounds awkward.

Only A is left.

A seems to be the answer.
But shouldn't there be a , before guided in option A?

I don't think we need to add a "," here.

We need "that" to introduce the following clause. Eliminate C, D and E.
Both X & Y is the correct idiom, then eliminate B.
Only A stands.

Besides, all the answers except A confusingly suggest that King's being "a mystic" and "guided... by omens..." were separate matters.

Would C be correct answer if "that" were to added before "this"? And, does the meaning of the paragraph change?

The rest of choices are not parallel.
