The figure above shows the circular cross section of a concrete water pipe. If the inner radius of the pipe is r feet and the outside radius of the pipe is f feet, what is the the value of r?

Why is (2) insufficient to solve the problem

( 2) The area of the concrete in the cross section is 1.29pi square feet.

The area of the concrete is not the same as the area of the inner circle, right? Unless you knew the area of the cirlce of which r is a radius, you wouldn't be able to find the area.

The area in the cross section is simply the difference in areas of the outer and inner circles. There are an infinite number of ways to get to this number if there is no other information regarding either circle or the relationship between the two.
