The figure shown above represents a modern painting that consists of four differently colored rectangles, each of which has length l and width w. If the area of the painting is 4,800 square inches, what is the width, in inches, of each of the four rectangles?
A. 15
B. 20
C. 25

=> L=3W
Total area 4LW = 4800
solving for W, we get W = 20.

Nice simple problem. Thx Gluon.

let L equal the length of one of the smaller rectangles and let W equal the width of the smaller rectangles.

We can see that L = 3W

Also note that b/c there are 4 little rectangles we can say that
4(L*W)=4800.

Now just plug in for L. 4(3W*W)=4800 ---> 3W^2=1200 W^2=400

W=20 or -20. (has to be 20, since we can't have a negative value for a side of a rectangle)

Area of the painting = 4lw = 4800
lw = 1200

l = 3w, so lw = 3w(w) = 1200. w^2= 400, w = 20.
