I have checked this issue for our local specifics. The $400 delivery through Fedex + 20% of price (customs fee) seem a little bit prohibitive for buying Lenovo ThinkPad outside the states. This dilemma could be solved if somebody flew from the states to Moscow on vacation Senior Manager Joined: 19 Nov 2006 Posts: 256 Location: Washington, DC Schools: Ross 2010 Followers: 3 Kudos [?]: 18 [0], given: 1 Re: The great Laptop discussion forum [#permalink] ### Show Tags 25 Apr 2008, 12:49 For all you Lenovo fans the X61 seems to be the machine of choice. Did any of you look at the 3000 V200? I'm just wondering because it's slightly cheaper than the X61 and it has a widescreen which would be nice for the 12 in screen. It says it starts at 4 lbs so it is slightly heavier than the X61. I'm leaning heavily towards the X61, but someone suggested it so I just wanted to see what people thought. Also in terms of specs for the X61 would this be good: Processor: 2 duo (T8300) Windows XP Memory: 2 GB 1 DIMM Hard Drive: 160 GB 7200rpm Wireless Card: WIFI Link (supporting CentroPro) 2 yr depot Batteries: unsure. Recommendations? Battery options are: -4 cell enhanced -Exntended life -8 cell high capacity *Do I need Intel Turbo memory 1GB? What is that? Are there any other upgrades etc that you guys think I need. This comes to about$1500 (incl an extra battery) which isn't great, but not terrible either. I went through work which doesn't give a great discount but better than nothing. Although since my mom offered to buy my laptop I must admit I'm not overly concerned with it's price....

The non-techie that I am thanks you greatly!

I don't know the exact clock speed of your CPU, but both ones they offer are good. I would get the 8cell battery, since it'll make the computer last a LONG time without the plug and some people like how it sticks out so they can carry the laptop better. The Turbo Memory does make things faster, but you need Vista to use it (I refuse to use Vista right now), it's up to you if you want to spend the money for a faster bootup and loading some programs. I would definitely consider bluetooth and fingerprint reader, just for convenience. Not necessary though. Looks good from my end. _________________ **************************** GMAT Club Knowledge Vault: http://gmatclub.com/forum/123 Haas Ambassador http://gmatclub.com/forum/128-t62555 Kryzak's Profile: http://gmatclub.com/forum/111-t56286 Member Essays: http://gmatclub.com/forum/103-t50969 Senior Manager Joined: 23 Jan 2008 Posts: 498 Followers: 1 Kudos [?]: 52 [1] , given: 0 Re: The great Laptop discussion forum [#permalink] ### Show Tags 26 Apr 2008, 08:13 1 This post received KUDOS I saw a review on CNET (i think - naturally now I cant find it) of a machine with the turbo thing. Their conclusion was that it wasn't really any better than using hte built-in Vista version of it (you can insert one of those usb "thumb drives"). With either of them there was small (though measurable) improverment. However, this improvement was BLOWN AWAY by simply upgrading the RAM. to 3 or 4 gigs. It is very unlikely you will get any improvement if you have 3-4 gigs. As a computer engineer (masters degree), I can vouch for this making sense (at least not being surprising) in terms of computer architecture. (admittedly sometimes they do something surprising and cool, alas this doesn't seem to be one of them) I personally bought with a 1-chip 2gb ram chip, and I will save almost$100 buying a second 2gb chip online ($60 vs$150ish at lenovo). THe installation is not scary at all. There is panel on the bottom of the machine designed specifically to access the memory easy. Seriously, my grandmother could do it. As far as getting the right chip, there are websites lice crucial memory and kingston memory where you can look it up online!

p.s. Why do I keep saying "3-4 gigs" instead of just 3 or 4? Because if you get 32-bit windows (i believe) your machine only likes the first 3 gigs. IF you get the 64 bit windows it will use all 4!

I just ordered a Lenovo X61 and I seriously hope you guys are right about the ship dates because my est ship date is 7/21/08!!!! That would be cutting it really close. Ack. I really hope that is a great over compensation on their part.

Mine was a statement of fact, not a prediction!
That being said, it sounds like so far we have all received them at least a week before they were even supposed to start the shipment!

mine was about 18 or 19 days. Of course, there could conceivably be a longer line now, or if you pick tougher components to source, etc.

Seriously you might be better off. I don't know why it says mine will take so long. I don't feel like I ordered anything that specialized......

finally, the black version!

I will try to find one in stores to check it out. Anyone know if they're better or worse than the X61s?

At first glance the specs seem about the same as the x61 tablet - lower processor speeds than the x61 non tablet. Actually, Other than the sexy body (in my admittedly brief review) I didn't see any real differencein the new machine. I had thought maybe it would have a cd drive integrated AND under 3 lbs etc.. oh well, i am sure this will drive sales among people who want something that looks cool!

It does have an 11 in screen which seems pretty small. But I love the red. I wish the X61 came in red. Oh well....

Is it safe to spray-paint the back of the monitor of the x61? I am not (entirely) joking.

Anyone know why they no longer give you the 8 cell battery option for the X61s??? You can only choose 4-cell and then buy an extra 8 cell for \$150???

Just got a note from Lenovo that said they are currently experiencing delays with batterys. If you are planning to purchase from them I recommend buying sooner rather than later. Kry, perhaps this is why they are no longer offering the 8 cell?
