The great medieval universities had no administrators, yet they endured for centuries. Our university has a huge administrative staff, and we are in serious financial difficulties. Therefore, we should abolish the positions and salaries of the administrators to ensure the longevity of the university. Which one of the following arguments contains flawed reasoning that most closely parallels the flawed reasoning in the argument above? (A) No airplane had jet engines before 1940, yet airplanes had been flying since 1903. Therefore, jet engines are not necessary for the operation of airplanes. (B) The novelist’s stories began to be accepted for publication soon after she started using a computer to write them. You have been having trouble getting your stories accepted for publication, and you do not use a computer. To make sure your stories are accepted for publication, then, you should write them with the aid of a computer. (C) After doctors began using antibiotics, the number of infections among patients dropped drastically. Now,however, resistant strains of bacteria cannot be controlled by standard antibiotics. Therefore, new methods of control are needed. (D) A bicycle should not be ridden without a helmet. Since a good helmet can save the rider’s life, a helmet should be considered the most important piece of bicycling equipment. (E) The great cities of the ancient world were mostly built along waterways. Archaeologists searching for the remains of such cities should therefore try to determine where major rivers used to run.

I don't think C,D or E are contenders for this question.
Between A and B, A is better.

IMO B. B has a similar structure to original arg.
Orig arg: Ancient Unis endured without admin Our uni suffering with admin To endure we must remove all admin B: Novelist started using a computer , her stories started getting published You aren't able to get anything published, you don't have a computer. Use a computer to get published.
OA please?

OA please? I have the same response. Another vote for 'B'.

I think its A....The argument cites the example of a past event and makes a statement in general about present.....This is happening clearly in A....So IMO it is the answer...

Why I think A should be incorrect is that although it is giving an example of the past and then going on to the present, the option is not in the same flow as the statement. In the statement we are going from the positive (Medieval universities, no administrators, endured for centuries), to negative (our university, huge administration, serious financial difficulties) and then suggesting to go back to the concept which was giving a positive result (abolish position and salaries of administrators). In option B, we can see this change. The option goes from positive (novelist's stories being accepted for publication after she started using computers) then negative (stories not being accepted for publication, because you do not use a computer) and then suggesting to accept the concept which gave positive results (should use computers). Comments please.

My initial choice was "A" but I upon further review, I believe the answer is "B".
The original stem: In the past, X performed well. Today, Y does not perform well. Therefore we should go back to X to ensure positive performance going forward.
Choice "A": X performed well in the past. Today, Y performs fine w/o the use of X. Therefore, we should go back to X. [No clear reason to use X over Y. Both work.]
Choice "B": X = publishing. Y = not being published. Therefore, use X to get published. [X works. Y doesn't. Use X to get results.]
