i think this qn was posted a week or 2 ago...i couldn't understand the reason as to why the answer was correct.

i'm taking a guess and saying that it is D.

Anyone have any insight on what the OA is and why?

Which should refers to the noun that preceed it. This is not the case here. The growth of railroads is far behind which.

A, B and C are OUT.

determined and differed are parallel in the verb Tense.

So, it is D.

Answer is E. We have a nice explanation in the link below

Now, cutting the whole thing short. D& E are the closest contenders for the answer.

E is the final answer because E brings in the gerund 'differing' which is more appropriate in this situation than the past participle 'differed'.

My understand is very simple, action following the word 'determined' lives in the past, and action following the word 'differing' lives in the present.
