Please explain, why not:
(D) determined by when the sun reached the observer?s meridian and differed
You may say, that it is not clear which noun "determined" reffers to, but there were a lot of other question with similar constructions considered to be correct.

Another vote for D.
What was determined by such and such? It should be local times, not the abolition of local times. So the verb should be WHICH WERE, not WAS. Also taking into account parallelism, only D exhibits such as in "reached, and differed"

Picked C.
"was" incorrect in A and B.
"determined" incorrectly tries to modify "local times" in D and E.
Although C has a mixed tense , determined and differing.
I think we can live with it, coz if it were "differed" it would mean that local times no longer differ.

Hm.. I agree.
I originally thought the answer would be D, but now I come to think of it, I think the sentence structure is "local times, which were determined (adjective)... and differing(adjective)..."

C is wrong unless you use another which after 'and' to make another restrive clause to modify the previous noun.
And we can not use differing because local times has/have been demolished (no longer valid)
B and D seems parallel.
I dont think you can use phrase here to modify the nearest nouns.
B should be it.

C has to be it......
which were determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing
Were is used 'cos we are refrring to local times(plural).

No C is bad
To make things parallel in restrictive clause, you need another which.
Look at the dixions problem in OG
Many of the dixions that are currently uncontrolled and that north american are exposed

Hate to change my initial pick. But looks like E.

A, B, and D are out cause they are not parallel..
couple of things...to look for...
abolition, ...establishment...
so the struggle here is first should it be abolition....differed.....establishment?
or
aboltion....differing....establishment....
I think differeing here is correct.
so next I think should we use which or determined?
here we need which, since it refers specifically to local times....which are plural...
C it is...

why not E? if C, then that means which "were" determined by....and "differing"....
that leads to different tense....
E can go with tense problem.
