Choice is between C ad D. i think during is require before waking in C.
(C) in higher concentrations during sleeping than waking

I think all using 'when' is wrong, because what is the subject of the adverb clause.
The original subject is hormone; clearly, hormone cannot sleep.
Hence, we use 'during' to get rid of the error.
during sleep than during waking hours is more parallel.

(D) does not seem to fit in well more beacuse of 'waking hours' ..... I'm still figuring out what 'waking hours' mean.
(E) fits in rightly. But even here 'when' refers to the 'hormone'. But still, I think (E) is the right answer.
By the way, what the OA??

D)..."secreted" demonstrates an ongoing process. so its not that the hormone is secreted at one point as stated by "when" but during a period of time as stated by "during".
