I say E.

The sentence works better to have "in higher concentrations" follow secreted. So that eliminates A and B. In C, "during sleeping" should be "during sleep". I originally thought D but I am changing it to E because I think in E, it is trying to say when the hormone is asleep, which makes sense.

Actually, I am not sure between D and E. It depends on what the sentence is trying to say. I'm not a scientist....

I think D makes the most sense if the hormone isn't actually the thing that can sleep, but if the hormone can "sleep", then E makes sense.

I guess D is probably right...

The problem with E is of modifier. It says that hormone is secreted in .... when asleep .. so is it that hormone is asleep ???

D is clear when it says that hormone is secretd during sleep...

The argument that you guys are making for E is the same for D. The difference is that D isn't parallel while E is. So I'll go with E based on being parallel.

Original
The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake.

option D

The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted
in higher concentrations during sleep than during waking hours

option E

The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted
in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake

The text in RED can be removed 'cos they are not necessary (prepositional phrase and absolute phrase)

Now you can clearly see why D is correct

I recall from Spidey's notes that during should only be used for a definite time period. For example: During the two hours of sleep as opposed to during sleep. Dont you think E should be the right choice?

another way to look at it is

asleep and awake are adjective. they are modifying a noun that is not in the sentence. Therefore E is incorrect.

Hey All,

Lots of good discussion here, and I think the right answer was explained here and there in pieces. I thought I'd take a stab at putting it all together in one place.

The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake.

(A) during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake
PROBLEM: "When" is a relative pronoun, meaning it's a modifier, meaning it has to modify something. Relative pronouns always modify nouns, but there is no adequate noun. Who is "awake" in the phrase, "when awake" (something has to be).

(B) when sleeping in higher concentrations than waking hours
PROBLEM: Again, who's sleeping?

(C) in higher concentrations during sleeping than waking
PROBLEM: This sounds like the comparison is between time spent asleep and time spent WAKING UP. The comparison should be between being asleep and being awake.

(D) in higher concentrations during sleep than during waking hours
ANSWER: Gets rid of "When" and compares the right two things.

(E) in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake
PROBLEM: Two "Whens" = double the trouble.

Hope that helps!
