Use the following rule to construct sentences:

Subject (the growth hormone) + Action (is secreted) + Manner (in higher concentrations) + Time (during sleep than during waking hours)

Hence, D.

My answer is also D.

'during sleep than during waking hours' - correct comparison of nouns

ob did a great job explaining the correct sentence structure as well

So, (E) is wrong because it does not add a sense of time here (as it uses "when" rather than "during") or is there any other reason for (E) to be wrong)???

By the way OA is (D).

The problem with (E) is "when asleep than when awake." The concepts of "asleep" and "awake" do apply only to hormones

We could have possibly used 'when' to correct the sentence, however it would make the sentence less concise as follows: '...when a person is asleep than when he/she [person] is awake'

I know that it's correct, but I don't think I know all the proper grammatical terms to explain the rule. Maybe someone else can help out.

Oops. The second sentence should read "The concepts of "asleep" and "awake" do not apply to hormones "
